Located in the heart of the iconic Byron Bay township, and adjacent to its pristine beaches, sits Carlyle Street. The brief called for a house that responded to Byron Bay’s subtropical climate, cultural richness and reflective of the relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural beauty of the region.
The site sits in the heart of the Byron Bay township with a short stroll down to the main beach. The site is surrounded by mature native trees and sub-tropical species with a northerly aspect and access to the cooling ocean breezes.
The residence is composed of two interlocking block forms, one extending to a two-story height, creating a series of interconnected spaces that seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape. The design is guided by both active and passive environmental strategies, enabling the home to naturally ventilate and maintain a strong connection to the land.

The design provides a private and secluded four bedroom residence sheltered amongst the mature plantings of the beachside location. The north facing site allows the building to capture the northerly solar aspect and the natural breezes coming off the ocean. The elevated portion houses the private living quarters and amenities with the public areas on the ground floor.
The integrated outdoor pavilion connects the main house and provides the indoor-outdoor spaces with the intimate garden setting to the front and the sheltered pool area to the back.
