Australian Institute of Architects National Award 2024 entrant - ACT Chapter
Originally designed by the esteemed Australian architect Ken Woolley in his early years at Pettit & Sevitt, this mid-century home served as the foundation for a thoughtful renovation and modernization. The result is a harmonious transformation that honours the original design while seamlessly integrating contemporary updates.
The brief called for a complete modernisation incorporating modifications to layout, functionality and solar passive performance. The design concept, in response to the brief, centred on improvements to internal functionality to align with modern needs with a range of passive and active environmental design features.
The project included the demolition of the interior linings with full services upgrades including structural modifications, custom built-in furnishings and joinery, insulation, new double glazed window joinery reflecting the original windows and fenestrations, floor finishes and automated ventilation to actively cool the house in summer.
The introduction of large double sliding glazed doors, leading from the courtyard through the rumpus room, provide a visual connection with the rear raised travertine pool deck allowing a seamless flow throughout the residence and a sense of transparency connecting the previously disjointed areas.

The flexibility of the design erodes the barriers between indoor and outdoor living allowing for natural cross-ventilation and connectivity between indoor spaces, pool and outdoor gardens.
At the core of the house a raised ceiling provides a sense of grandeur and space reflective of the activities within and provides natural light to penetrate the interior and allows glimpses to the mature trees and sky beyond. The design stays true to the original design and accentuates the clean lines and horizontal planes of the modernist form.
The exterior cladding incorporates the warm textures of vertical ribbed timbers off set with the original painted rough laid brickwork with changes of ceiling levels to define the different spaces and circulation paths below.
The vast span of the new 7.5m wide carport respectfully aligns with the original detailing of the mid-century house resulting in a seamless and respectful addition to the front of the residence.
The recent separate front portion of the renovation was recently announced as a finalist in the Master Builders Association (MBA) 2022 ACT Chapter Awards for renovations and also featured in the Australian Institute of Architects 2024 National Awards, ACT Chapter.
